TutelaMinorum President Cardinal Sean O’ Malley will give the key note address this Thursday in a church leadership Safeguarding formation seminar for the Brazilian Bishop’s Conference.

The three day seminar, entitled “Healing Wounds” precedes the annual assembly of the Bishops Conference, the largest episcopal conference in the Church.

It is organized by the Special Commission for the Protection of Children and Adolescents of the National Conference of Bishops of Brazil (CNBB), the Conference of Religious of Brazil (CRB) and the Núcleo Lux Mundi task force.

TutelaMinorum member Nelson Giovanelli is a member of the Nucleo Lux Mundi task force established to aid the bishops in their roll out of safeguarding structures at a diocesan level.

This formation seminar is the first in a series of initiatives to further advance the Holy Father’s request to open up transparent dialogue and set concrete structures and processes in terms of preventing and healing child sexual abuse, contained in the Apostolic Letter “Vos Estis Lux Mundi.”

This Seminar will pay particular attention to the following three areas of study:

1) The pastoral and spiritual dimensions of listening and caring for victims, while aiming at healing their wounds and providing for reconciliation;

2) Coping with denunciation cases and their legal and canonical aspects;

3) Guidance in terms of how to best elaborate and expand upon guidelines for the protection of children, adolescents and vulnerable persons in the Church of Brazil.

According to the pediatrician and president of the Lux Mundi Nucleus, Eliane De Carli, “This seminar aims to address issues related to the Motu Proprio “ Vos Estis Lux Mundi ”, while examining these aspects through the paradigmatic perspective of preventing sexual violence committed against children, adolescents and vulnerable persons while constructing safe environments within the Church in Brazil ”.

The seminar will be attended by Brazilian teachers and a Working Group of the Pontifical Commission for the Protection of Minors.

Participants of this event will include:

The Archbishop of Boston and President of the Pontifical Commission for the Protection of Minors, Cardinal Sean Patrick O’Malley;

The auxiliary bishop of Brasília (DF), Dom José Aparecido Gonçalves;

Members of the Pontifical Commission for the Protection of Minors, Teresa Kettelkamp (USA) and and Father Hans Zollner (Germany);

Professor Josiane Rose Petry Veronese;

CNBB legal advisor, Frei Evaldo Xavier Gomes.

In 2019, the first installment of this Seminar with Father Hans Zollner, examined in depth the issues related to sexual violence in the face of children and adolescents committed by members of the Church and their repercussions.
