Social Worker

Sr. Mary Niluka Perera, a member of the Congregation of Our Lady of Charity of the Good Shepherd, Province of Sri Lanka/Pakistan since 1996, is a professional social worker and holds a master’s degree in social work from the University of Mumbai-India. 

She is currently the coordinator of Catholic Care for Children International (CCCI) of the International Union of Superiors General (UISG) Rome, that aims to support women religious to move from providing residential care for children to family and community-based care.

She has served in the congregation’s ministries as a social worker in different capacities which include the care of children in institutional and community-based settings.  She has advocated for the rights and needs of the child to have a family for healthy and holistic development and has worked to bring about changes in the care sector as well as in child protection by initiating family and community-based child protection programmes in the province.

She was a member of the Good Shepherd Justice and Peace Commission in her province and in the Good Shepherd Asia/Pacific network.  She represented the Congregation at various social networks/groups at local and international levels particularly for issues concerning women and children.

As member of networks of the Movement of Religious Women against Human Trafficking, as AMRAT and Talitha Kum, she joined with other congregations to combat trafficking against women and children.   

 In 2022, Pope Francis appointed her a member of the Pontifical Commission for the Protection of Minors.
