Auxiliary Bishop of Paris

Bishop Thibault Verny is the bishop in charge of the Protection of Minors for the Archdiocese of Paris and served as interlocutor of the CIASE (Independent Commission on Sexual Abuse in the Church).

After graduating in Engineering, he entered the Paris Seminary where he began his ecclesiastical studies. He was then sent to Rome as a student at the Pontifical French Seminary and obtained a Licentiate in Dogmatic Theology at the Pontifical Gregorian University.

He was ordained a priest on 27 June 1998 for the Archdiocese of Paris. Since 2008 he has been Oblate of the Olivetan Monastery of Notre-Dame de la Sainte-Espérance in Mesnil Saint-Loup.

He has held the following ministerial posts: Vicar of the Saint-Honoré-d’Eylau parish (1999-2005); Chaplain of the Janson-de-Sailly college and lycée, of the Saint-Louis scout group and of the Eugène-Delacroix college (2001-2005); Parish priest of Notre-Dame de Lorette (2005-2016); since 2007 Dean of the Magenta-Lafayette deanery; since 2014 Deputy Diocesan Delegate for Priestly and Religious Vocations; since 2016 Vicar General.

Bishop Verny was involved in the negotiation, implementation and monitoring of the agreement between the Diocese of Paris and the Public Prosecutor of Paris facilitating reports to the justice system and is in charge of all reporting and follow-up of cases in relation to civil and canonical justice in the Archdiocese.

In his role as safeguarding point person, Mons. Verny has created a diocesan abuse monitoring committee and a working group to study the establishment of a first reception centre for accused perpetrators. He has also overseen the creation of an information and prevention of abuse website with the introduction of compulsory online training for educators in the Diocese of Paris.

In 2022, Pope Francis appointed him a member of the Pontifical Commission for the Protection of Minors.
